lesson 20~ Jesus in his own home temple in Nazareth

Luke 4:16-30

When Jesus returned to his home town, he went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath. He stood up to read, handed him the book of Isaiah. He opened it and read these words, "The Spirit of the Lord is in me. This is because God choose me to tell the good News to the poor. God sent me to tell the prisoners of sin that they are free, and to tell the blind that they can see again. God sent me to free those who have been treated unfairly, and to announce the time when the Lord will show kindness to his people" (Is. 61:1-2). He closed the book and sat down.

They eyes of everyone there was on Jesus. He then said, "Today, this Prophecy has happened."Everyone questioned in their minds as to what he had said. It seemed impossible for wasn't he Joseph's son, in whom they had lived with for years? He answered their question by prophesying that they would one day tell him to heal himself, and preform the miracles that he had done in Capernaum. Then he went on explaining that a prophet is never accepted in his own country. They became bad at him and went to stone him. But he slipped away from them.

Lesson 21~ John the baptist is thrown into jail and Jesus starts to preach.

Luke 3:19-20; Mat. 4:12

John the baptist spoke against Herod and the evil thing he did when he married his brother, Phillip's wife, Heroldias.  This made Herod mad, so he had John put in jail.

When Jesus had heard that John had been put into jail, he  left Nazareth, and went into Galilee and stayed in Capernaum on the seas coast near the borders of Zabulon & Nephthalim. In doing this, Jesus was fulfilling the prophecy that was spoken by Isaiah (Is. 9:1). Jesus was the light that they would behold.

There Jesus started to preach, saying, "Repent:for the kingdom of heaven is near."These people accepted and listened to him.

lesson 19~ Jesus teaches the people with Parables

Mat. 4:12/Mark 1:1-15/Luke 4:14-15/John 4:46-54

Jesus went about teaching the people with parables. Parables are stories using things on earth that we can see, touch, hear, and taste, and putting them with lessons of things that you can not see, touch, hear or taste because they are spiritual. You can read many of these stores and his lessons in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

When Jesus' followers asked why he taught in parables, he explained that it was so that those who really didn't want to learn and understand spiritual things would not do so.

lesson 18~ Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well

As Jesus was passing through Samaria, he stopped at Jacob's well there. Jesus was thirsty and ask a Samarian woman for a drink. The Samerian woman ask him why he was asking her for a drink of water. You see he was a Jew and she was  a Samarian. Jews had been taught not to talk to a person who was not a Jew. Even though those in Samaria were have Jews, they were looked down upon by the Jews. Jesus did not let this keep him from talking to her, for he had a plan.

Jesus tells her that the Samarian woman does not understand who he is & that if she had known who he was she would have asked for living water. She didn't understand, so she asked him how he could get the water from the well if he had no bucket to put into the well to get water out of the well. Jesus tells her that whoever would drink of the water from this well would get thirsty again. BUT whoever drank the water that he would give would not be thirsty again. For Jesus was talking of the Holy Spirit and eternal life.

Then Jesus told the woman to go and get her husband and bring him back to Jesus. She told Jesus that she did not have a husband. Jesus told her that what she said was true, but that she had been married five different time to different husbands, and the man she was living with was not her husband.

The woman thought that Jesus was a prophet. Then  she went on to tell him that her people worshiped God there in Mt. Samaria , but the Jews worshiped God in Jerusalem. Jesus told her that the day was coming when the true worshipers would worship God in their hearts, not a certain place.

Then she said that she knew that the Messiah was to come and explain everything to them. Jesus told her that he was the Messiah.

About them Jesus followers came with the food they had gone to get, and the woman went into the city to tell everyone that she had met the Messiah, and brought them out to meet Jesus. Jesus stayed 2 days with them teaching them. After Jesus left the people of the city told the woman, we believe because we have seen and heard him ourselves.

Lesson 17~ Jesus drives out those who turns the temple into a market place

John 2:13-17

It was the time of the Passover for the Jews. Jesus went up to Jerusalem to celebrate it.When he entered the temple, he saw that tables had bee set up to sell animals for the peoples sacrifices. He also saw that the spiritual leaders were telling the people that their animals were not good enough to sacrifice, so that they would have to buy one of the temples animals. To make matters worse, the tables were set up in the only part of the temple that non-Jewish people were permitted to go to pray to God. This made Jesus very angry!

So he sat down,  and made a whip. When he was done making the whip, he started turning tables over onto the floor, using the whip to drive the animals and those who were selling them out of the temple. All the while yelling to them that the temple was for prayer, not to be turned into a marketplace.

His followers remembered what it is written in the Old testament, "My strong love for your temple completely controls me."
