Lesson 15~ Jacob tricks Esau into selling his birthright
Genesis 25:29-34
One day after the boys had grown into men, Esau came in from from being away from home. Esau saw that Jacob was cooking some lentil soup, and was very hungry. So he asked Jacob for a bowl of soup. Jacob told him that he would only give him a bowl of the soup if he sold his birthright to him. Esau was so hungry he thought that he would die of hunger, so he sold his birthright to Jacob. With a smile, Jacob gave him lentil soup AND bread.
Let me explain why this is important. Most of a Father's land and what he owned was given to his oldest son when he died. Also the younger sons were to serve under the oldest son all his life. So Esau was giving away all that he was suppose to inherit for himself and his family to his bother for some soup and bread. Doing do was to make himself a servant to his little brother. This would later cause a problem in their relationship.
